I moved to Portugal 3 years ago, not speaking a word of Portuguese. Pretty soon, I realized that if I wanted to connect with people — like really connect — I’d have to learn the language. Most locals didn’t speak English, and I didn’t want to be mais um estrangeiro just getting by.

My friends took my learning seriously — and after many finos and lots of laughter, I started mixing the Portuguese words I knew into my English sentences.

I’d say things like:

• “Let’s go à praia,”
• “I need to comprar pão,”
• “Estou tired hoje.”

It wasn’t on purpose. It just... happened. And it stuck.

That mix of languages became my daily vocabulary — a kind of expat dialect.
